Radio New Zealand has chosen Lawo audio consoles, associated I/O devices, and Arista switch fabric for its recording facilities at Auckland Town Hall and Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre. The decision followed a rigorous tender process, including A/B testing and evaluating multiple console manufacturers. Professional Audio & Television (PAT) was awarded the contract through its Auckland office.
The upgrade is part of RNZ’s effort to implement a future-proof audio system capable of supporting its live broadcast and high-quality recording operations. The primary objective was to ensure exceptional audio quality across the entire signal chain, from stage connectivity and preamplification to digital processing and final production recording.
RNZ’s new setup includes two 32-fader mc²36 MKII consoles, one installed at each location. The consoles are complemented by Lawo A__stage64, A__mic8 and Power Core devices, which provide versatile I/O extensions and serve as MADI and DANTE converters. This networked audio infrastructure leverages the AoIP technology, offering a scalable solution for RNZ’s evolving requirements. PAT will configure and install Arista 710P compact, fanless PoE switches to support these systems, facilitating low-latency audio transport via SMPTE 2110-30 and ST2022-7 redundant media networks.
A pivotal project
Mike Heard, senior solutions architect at PAT, described the project as pivotal. “The Lawo mc²36 MKII consoles and accompanying I/O extensions provide RNZ with an advanced, modular platform that supports their commitment to producing live recordings of the highest quality. We are confident that this technology will play a vital role in RNZ’s continued success as a leading broadcaster.”
Jamie Annan, operations manager at RNZ, highlighted the benefits of the upgrade. “We are looking forward to installing these new Lawo consoles at our live recording venues, enabling our audio engineers to continue to deliver the high-quality RNZ listeners expect. This upgrade will allow us to significantly increase the number and types of audio sources, providing our audiences with a rich audio experience.”
PAT says the selection of Lawo mc²36 MKII consoles was driven by their audio fidelity, intuitive operation and adaptability to live recording environments. The consoles are compatible with AES67, MADI and DANTE protocols, ensuring seamless integration with legacy systems and modern digital workflows.
