The organizers of Radio TechCon 2022 on Nov. 28 have released a full program of sessions. The event is taking place at IET London: Savoy Place — the original home of the BBC — and the program includes a salute to the broadcaster’s centenary.
In a session titled “100 Years of BBC Technology in Three Objects,” Rachel Boon, the curator of computing and communications at the Science Museum in London, will introduce three original BBC artifacts from the Science Museum and discuss them with Bill Thompson, BBC R&D’s principal research engineer. The program also includes a session on adaptive podcasting that will explain how BBC R&D technology makes podcasts more relevant to audiences by updating them automatically.
Other notable features include:
- A live link-up with broadcast engineers in Ukraine to find out how they are staying on air during the war.
- TalkTV: Telly on the Radio — TalkTV launched this year, but radio systems are behind much of its technology. This session will explain what radio technologists need to know when their bosses announce they need to start doing TV.
- The Clone Rangers — How voice cloning creates everything from the voice of a young Luke Skywalker in movies to adding forgotten lines in the edit and, perhaps one day, replacing radio presenters. The Emmy-award-winning team at Respeecher will explain how voice cloning technology works and its ethical implications.
- London Bridge — The death of Queen Elizabeth II presented one of the most complex technical challenges the United Kingdom’s broadcast industry has faced. This session will present behind-the-scenes stories from those who were at the sharp end.
