Detlef Wiese, CEO and founder of two innovative companies, Ferncast and Binaurics Audio, has his ears set on an evolving frontier: transforming written content into broadcast-quality audio.
RedTech: What emerging challenge in broadcaster operations most influenced your recent product or platform development, and why was it important to address it now?
Detlef Wiese: One of the most significant emerging challenges for broadcasters today is producing more content for more platforms while operating with smaller editorial teams and tighter budgets. Traditional workflows were designed for linear radio or limited digital outputs.
Today, however, broadcasters must simultaneously feed broadcast radio, podcasts, smart speakers, social platforms, on-demand services and different audience segments.
This multiplatform demand has created production bottlenecks with the written and spoken content that must be prepared, adapted and published, and has expanded far faster than newsroom resources can keep pace.
Our platform, CaptionCast, was developed to address this imbalance by automating key parts of the content transformation process. CaptionCast enables written editorial content, such as news articles, interviews, or features, to be converted into high-quality audio formats for distribution as podcasts, audio articles or short-form shows.
Addressing this challenge now is essential because audience behavior has shifted decisively toward on-demand audio consumption. Broadcasters that cannot efficiently repurpose their editorial content into audio risk losing reach, engagement and ultimately relevance in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
RedTech: How does your technology help broadcasters save costs, grow revenues, simplify workflows, or enhance the audience experience?
Wiese: Instead of requiring a full studio process for every piece of audio content, with CaptionCast, written material can be transformed into professionally structured audio segments through automated workflows. This significantly reduces production costs while enabling teams to publish a far greater volume of audio output.

As Quentin Howard, technical consultant to Boom Radio, U.K., explains, “From a workflow perspective, CaptionCast is designed to integrate directly into existing editorial processes. Moderators continue to work in familiar radio-based environments, while the platform handles transcription, formatting, structuring and final preparation of the content for audio presentation. This removes many manually intensive steps and reduces the dependency on scarce studio time, audio editors and voice talent for routine productions.”
Beyond operational efficiency, the platform also opens new monetization opportunities. Broadcasters can launch additional podcast series, audio briefings or premium audio feeds without significantly expanding production resources.
At the same time, audiences benefit from a broader selection of personalized or topic-specific audio experiences that match modern listening habits across mobile devices, smart speakers and connected platforms.
RedTech: Are there any other operational or technical limitations that restrict broadcasters’ ability to move forward today, and how is your company addressing them?
Wiese: One of the most persistent challenges is the fragmentation of production tools and distribution systems. This increases complexity, introduces delays and makes it difficult to scale new formats efficiently.
Another limitation is the lack of flexible tools that allow editorial teams to experiment with new audio formats without committing substantial production resources. Innovation often requires testing new concepts quickly, yet traditional studio-based workflows make experimentation both costly and time-consuming.
CaptionCast helps reduce these barriers by integrating seamlessly into existing media infrastructures. By extending platforms with flexible software-driven capabilities and connecting editorial content, audio generation and distribution within a unified workflow, CaptionCast allows broadcasters to produce and publish new formats much faster.
RedTech: Looking ahead over the next three to five years, what practical change do you believe will most affect how audio services are produced, distributed, or monetized?
Wiese: Over the next three to five years, the most significant practical change in audio production and distribution will be the large-scale automation of content transformation and personalization.

Broadcasters already produce enormous volumes of text-based content, but only a small portion currently reaches audiences in audio form.
Advances in automation and artificial intelligence, including technologies used by platforms such as CaptionCast, will enable the conversion of much more of this editorial material into compelling audio experiences.
Media executive Christoph Falke says, “This shift will not replace traditional studio production but will complement it by enabling a new layer of scalable audio programming. Broadcasters will be able to publish hundreds of niche or topic-specific audio streams tailored to particular interests or audiences.”
As a result, monetization models will evolve as well. Instead of relying primarily on a few large flagship shows, broadcasters will increasingly build revenue through networks of specialized audio offerings that attract highly engaged audiences and targeted advertising opportunities.
