U.K. children’s radio station Fun Kids has introduced Fun Kids Windrush, a temporary digital radio station celebrating the Windrush generation, the Caribbean migrants who arrived in Britain aboard the MV Empire Windrush in 1948 and whose contributions helped shape modern British society. The station went on air on Monday, June 9, and will run for three weeks, through National Windrush Day on June 22.
Aimed at educating younger audiences, Windrush features programming created in collaboration with London youth groups. Participants from radio workshops contributed segments that air throughout the day, alongside a factual series, “The Windrush Story,” a drama called “The Girl and the Suitcase” and imaginative historical reports based on the 1948 voyage of the Empire Windrush.
The station’s playlist draws from Caribbean musical heritage, guided by writer and historian Edson Burton. It uses call-and-response structures rooted in those traditions. The playlist also includes a show by YolanDa Brown and daily features exploring Caribbean music’s influence on British culture.
Funding comes from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government via a Windrush Day grant awarded to Inspiring Audio, the production partner behind the initiative. Content is available on DAB in London and the U.K.’s South East, online and via smart speaker and mobile app.
