Moving studios is never easy and the project that faced the Glasgow School of Art’s School of Information and Technology looked particularly forbidding. Moving a surround sound room, a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 room along with an even more imposing 16-speaker Ambisonics spatial audio lab seemed insurmountable.
According to a release “The principal aim of the new SIT facility was to create a flexible, future-facing teaching and production environment capable of supporting industry-standard Dolby Atmos workflows, traditional 5.1 surround mixing, third-order [16-channel] Ambisonics mixing, with support for voiceover and Foley recording too.”
Integrator Mediaspec, with a little help from their friends at Genelec, pulled it off.
The new Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 space features 11 Genelec 8030C studio monitors plus a 7060 subwoofer for that “point one” low-end. The 8030s were brought over from the old space. The surround sound room also recycled Genelec monitors, 1029s.
The newly designed and more complicated Ambisonics lab complement consists of 16 8010A studio monitors and an 8050 subwoofer.
To the ears of GSA Sound Technician and Lecturer Simon Weins, “Genelec’s clarity and consistency have translated seamlessly from our studios at Pacific Quay to our new home at West Regent Street, minimizing the impact that the move had on the workflow of our students and allowing them to continue their work in a professional environment.”
