Alliance de la Radio, which represents France’s national and local private radio stations, has expressed its support for radio teams covering the wildfires affecting Gironde. This southwestern French department includes Bordeaux. It pointed to the work of local, national and community broadcasters keeping residents informed as the emergency unfolded. Their response highlights radio’s ability to deliver immediate, verified information and safety instructions during a crisis.
The alliance highlighted the work of private local stations WIT FM, Blackbox, ARL, Forever, Enjoy 33, Mélodie FM, FGL Fréquence Grands Lacs and Aqui FM across Gironde and the surrounding Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It credited their journalists, reporters, presenters and technical teams with maintaining coverage close to affected communities. According to the organization, the stations have provided residents with “responsive, reliable and useful information.”
National broadcasters have also deployed newsrooms and correspondents to cover the emergency, including RTL, Europe 1, RMC BFM, NRJ Group, Radio Classique and Skyrock. The alliance additionally recognized around 200 local and independent stations represented by SIRTI, the organization for France’s independent commercial radio sector, for relaying essential information. “When news becomes an emergency, radio is there,” the alliance noted.
The organization also referred to comments Nicolas Roche, secretary-general of France’s General Secretariat for Defense and National Security, made during the Assises de la Radio conference organized by French media regulator Arcom. The secretariat advises the French government on national security, defense and crisis planning. Roche identified radio as a strategic medium during emergencies, reflecting its wide availability, mobility and ability to distribute verified information quickly.
The Gironde response also reinforced the alliance’s joint campaign with France’s public-service radio group Radio France to require FM and DAB+ reception in all new vehicles. Car radios can maintain access to live information while people travel, evacuate an affected area or lose access to their usual communications services. The alliance argued, “Guaranteeing access to radio means preserving an essential tool for information, resilience and public safety.”
