Belgium’s Radio 2 sails into VRT MAX with new identity and technical innovation

As of June 10, visitors to the VRT’s Radio2.be website are automatically redirected to the new Radio 2 channel on VRT MAX, the Belgian public broadcaster’s digital audio and video platform. All Radio 2 content — including live broadcasts, video, podcasts and replays — is now hosted exclusively on VRT MAX.

Belle Perez performed during the final channel cruise

Radio 2, the market-leading station in Flanders with a 24% audience share between January and April 2025, has also introduced refreshed imaging and a new visual identity to mark the move.

To highlight the channel’s migration to VRT MAX, Radio 2 presenter Margaux took to the waterways of Flanders in a publicity tour between June 10 and 13. She travelled by canoe, paddle boat, giant swan and small party boat, taking on challenges set by co-hosts Ann Reymen and Daan Masset during their “Radio 2 Ann & Daan” program, which airs weekdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Masset also reported live from a canal boat throughout the week.

The campaign culminated on Saturday, June 14, with a celebratory voyage on the Bruges-Ostend canal, featuring a party boat of listeners and Radio 2 DJs, and a live concert by Belgian pop singer Belle Perez.

Looking good

On the technical side, VRT’s radio realization coordinator, Kris Van Veeckhoven, detailed the mobile setup used to maintain connectivity throughout the campaign. The core solution combined a backpack containing a Peplink MAX BR2 PRO router — equipped with multiple SIM cards for provider redundancy — and an AETA Scoopfone 4G codec connected via UTP.

The Peplink router fitted into a backpack

“Daan used the Peplink backpack for live interviews and reporting, both from the accompanying vessel and the canal shore,” said Van Veeckhoven. Additional video content was produced using Quicklink and smartphone setups for interviews and a P2 camera paired with a Mobile Viewpoint WMT Airlink transmitter. These visuals were displayed picture-in-picture during the “Radio 2 Ann & Daan” broadcast as part of the visual radio stream.

For the final leg to Ostend, Radio 2 deployed a remote mobile radio kit featuring an integrated Peplink router and two Dome PRO antennas. “The setup functioned as a remote studio, using a DHD XC3 core and DX2 consoles on board the boat to remotely trigger the OmniPlayer 3 playout system back in our Brussels engine room,” Van Veeckhoven explained. Power supply was a key consideration. “Battery demands from the Mobile Viewpoint WMT and Peplink router were significant, so we opted for V-mount camera batteries, which gave us roughly two hours per charge,” he added.

“Radio 2 remains the biggest station in Flanders,” said station manager Rino Ver Eecke. “We continue to deliver regional news and stories from local communities. Our new, energetic style and identity reflect the vitality of Radio 2, and the VRT MAX channel allows us to connect even more directly with our audience.”
