UNESCO creates content and connections for WRD2024

In 2011, UNESCO proclaimed Feb. 13 World Radio Day. The following year, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed it as a UN International Day. For World Radio Day 2024, UNESCO has created 20 one-minute audio inserts radio stations can play to celebrate the day and a data base of radio outlets worldwide willing to partner for programming.

The World Radio Day Minute inserts celebrate the history of radio and its various functions, forms and characteristics, including radio as the first responder, radio and music, jingles, education and entertainment, radio as the great connector, freedom of expression and radio’s responsibility concerning human rights.

UNESCO says the inserts are free for radio stations to use in programming or upload onto social media. The inserts are in English and include transcripts, should stations wish to rerecord them using their own presenters. However, they cannot be used for advertising or marketing purposes.

UNESCO is also offering stations, networks, or individual radio shows a list of radio outlets worldwide available to participate in programming partnerships for World Radio Day. Registered users can schedule interviews or conversations — either live or pre-recorded — with broadcast colleagues worldwide to compare the history and roles of radio in their respective countries on or leading up to Feb. 13, 2024.
