Teatro Real, located in Madrid’s Plaza de Oriente, has enhanced its audio production capabilities by integrating Lawo’s immersive audio technology. Recognized as one of the world’s leading opera houses and named the Best Opera Company in 2021, Teatro Real has upgraded its infrastructure to support modern productions while preserving its historic legacy.

Teatro Real, located in Madrid’s Plaza de Oriente

Since its inauguration in 1850, Teatro Real has undergone multiple renovations, most recently completed in 1997. Lawo’s IP audio solutions equip the venue to handle the demands of contemporary productions, including operas, concerts and dance performances. Systems integrator Telefónica provided the upgrade, supplied the network infrastructure using Cisco solutions and oversaw the integration process.

What’s under the hood

The installation features two 32-fader mc²56 MkIII consoles and one 16-fader mc²56 MkIII, powered by six A__UHD Core audio processing engines in redundant design, each boasting 1024 DSP channel processing. These consoles integrate seamlessly with Waves SoundGrid, enabling operators to access a comprehensive plug-in library for real-time signal processing.

Functions like reverbs, multi-tap delays, graphic equalizers and multiband compressors are controlled directly via the consoles, with settings stored and recalled using snapshots. Lawo A__stage64/80 stageboxes ensure compatibility with the theater’s existing infrastructure, while the HOME platform facilitates efficient audio signal distribution, offering features like desk mirroring and signal ownership to streamline workflows and enable flexible resource management.

A natural choice

Fernando Valiente Uceda, head of audiovisual resources at Teatro Real, noted the system’s benefits, explaining that the new setup allows all consoles to access the same central infrastructure, significantly improving workflows. “The Lawo mc²56 MkIII consoles were the natural choice for Teatro Real’s audio infrastructure upgrade. Their unrivaled performance and modular design not only meet the demands of our current productions but also offer flexibility for future endeavors,” he said.

Uceda added that the revamp reflects Teatro Real’s commitment to artistic excellence and its embrace of technology to elevate audience experiences. “At a time when immersive audio is increasingly integral to the theatrical landscape, Teatro Real’s investment sets a new standard for innovation and quality,” he said.

Lawo says the upgrade positions Teatro Real as a leader in integrating advanced audio technology in the performing arts, supporting its mission to deliver world-class productions and enrich the audience experience.
