WorldDAB reports that Switzerland has discontinued FM broadcasts in some of the motorway tunnels that cut through the mountainous country. The Lötschberg car transport tunnel, which circumvents the Lötschen Pass in the Bernese Alps, and the new Gubrist Tunnel to the northwest of Zürich no longer carry FM broadcasts. This is in line with the country’s plan to discontinue all FM broadcasts by the end of 2024 and the expansion of the digital broadcasting system on Swiss roads.
Drivers using the Lötschberg and Gubrist tunnels must switch to DAB/DAB+ to receive broadcasts. Bakom, Switzerland’s Federal Office of Communications, encouraged regular tunnel users to have access to DAB/DAB+ in their cars by the end of 2022. During the tunnel renovation, the tunnel operators, in consultation with Bakom, replaced the old FM system with DAB.
