The Radio Academy’s ARIAS 2024, May 7 at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane, will honor two BBC personalities, Annie Nightingale and Steve Wright.
Nightingale will receive a Pioneer Award, only the third given. She lays claim to being the first female DJ for BBC Radio 1, in 1970. That led to a popular run at Radio 1’s “Sunday Request Show” and several other pop and electronic music shows.
Wright was known for a multidecade career leading different pop music programs for the BBC, including “Top of the Pops” and even a stint hosting the Radio 1 “Breakfast Show.” He started at BBC Radio 1 in 1980.
Both passed away earlier this year.
In addition to the personal honorifics, there will be over two dozen awards for shows and presenters such as Best New Presenter, Best Music Breakfast Show, Best News Coverage, Station of the Year, Best New Podcast and the Moment of the Year Award.
The Radio Academy’s ARIAS 2024 bills itself as “the UK’s leading audio and radio awards that celebrate outstanding shows and the creative teams behind them.”
