Lawo’s LUX provides innovative solution for radio broadcasters

In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, where radio, television, podcasting and streaming are merging into a multifaceted continuum, broadcasters face the challenge of adapting to diverse content creation scenarios. This dynamic environment demands flexible and adaptable tools that empower users to transition between different tasks and devices seamlessly. Lawo, a leading authority in network, video, audio, control and monitoring technology, recognizes these challenges and has introduced a groundbreaking solution: LUX, Lawo’s product design system.

Versatility is a Lawo design priority. Lawo’s new crystal console, for instance, is a cost-effective and highly versatile on-air radio mixer, but its capabilities extend beyond traditional radio broadcasting. It is also a dynamic control surface for mc² mixers and other products that communicate via Open Sound Control. This adaptability empowers a single hardware unit to cater to multiple use cases, seamlessly adjusting its functionality as needed.

LUX defines the “what,” “how” and “why” of Lawo’s human interface strategy.

At its core, LUX defines the “what”— a collection of icons, colors, typography, nomenclature, user interface components and layout principles that maintain consistency across Lawo’s products. It also defines “how” hardware and software elements should be combined to create intuitive, efficient and consistent workflows through workflow principles, interaction models and human interface guidelines. Lastly, it ensures that the “why” has been thoroughly understood — why a certain problem is being solved in the first place, what is the root need that needs solving, and why particular workflows and models should be used for those situations.

In short, LUX ensures that Lawo products communicate consistently and intuitively, regardless of the specific tools in use.

The core philosophy

LUX’s core philosophy is to define fundamental principles once, and then tailor interfaces to the specific context, task and hardware. Whether using a physical control surface, a laptop with a small display and a trackpad or a custom VisTool UI designed for remote work, users will always encounter a consistent user experience. LUX empowers broadcasters to focus on their fundamental tasks and processes rather than getting bogged down in learning different systems and behaviors.

The power of VisTool takes this consistency a step further by customizing user interfaces and technical workflows to an individual user’s specific needs. With VisTool, Lawo can craft bespoke interfaces that align perfectly with each user’s workflow, making their experience even more intuitive and efficient.

Consider the scenario of an engineer, host or talent working across various radio facilities, from working with a diamond console in large broadcast studios to small edit suites or home setups using a crystal desk. With Lawo’s technology and the consistency provided by LUX, they seamlessly transition between different tools and configurations. They can count on a unified look and feel, eliminating the need to relearn systems and behaviors.

In a rapidly changing media landscape, Lawo’s LUX and its suite of innovative products empower broadcasters to stay at the forefront of technology, offering them adaptability, consistency and reliability. By bridging the gap between technology and user experience, Lawo is shaping the future of radio broadcast solutions.

The author is senior director, Experience & Design, CTO Office at Lawo
