Good to Great Lesson #27: Turn information into imagination

by Ken Benson September 8, 2026 4 min read
Good to Great Lesson #27: Turn information into imagination
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Radio has always been a storytelling medium, yet stations too often give listeners information instead of stories. Scores, weather, concert dates, celebrity news and contest details may communicate the facts. Stories give those facts meaning and make people care.

Consider a traffic report that says, “Traffic is backed up as far as you can see.” It communicates the situation but gives the listener little reason to engage. “You can see your exit up ahead. It’s right there, and you’ve been staring at it for the last 15 minutes” turns the same information into a familiar and frustrating human experience.

Radio has no screen, but it has access to something more powerful: the listener’s imagination. Great storytellers activate it by finding the revealing detail, emotional response, absurd moment or human element within the information. They do not simply describe what happened; they help the audience see and feel it.

The same principle can transform a promotion. “Win a trip to London” identifies the prize, while “Next Friday, you could have breakfast at home and dinner in London” places the listener inside the experience. One version supplies information, but the other encourages the audience to imagine the journey.

Storytelling is not limited to on-air personalities or major features. Stations can use it when writing promos, presenting contests, introducing music, covering their communities and marketing their brands. Every piece of information presents an opportunity to create an image in the listener’s mind.

Facts remain essential, but facts alone rarely create an emotional connection. When listeners can picture an experience, they become more likely to feel it and remember who brought it to life. Turning information into imagination allows radio to exploit one of its greatest strengths: Theater of the mind.

Takeaway: Facts tell listeners what happened, while stories help them see and understand it. Great storytelling makes them feel the experience and remember it.

Ken Benson has spent more than 40 years helping radio stations around the world build stronger brands, sharper programming and more memorable on-air content. Through his consultancy, P1 Media Group, he has advised broadcasters across six continents on strategies to turn good stations into dominant ones.
