Global has announced the launch of 12 new digital radio stations for some of the United Kingdom’s most prominent commercial radio brands, set to go live on Thursday, Sept. 12.
The new stations will be sister outlets for various popular Global music brands. This follows the success of previous brand extensions like Heart Dance and Capital Dance and the popularity of nostalgia and mood stations such as Heart 80s and Smooth Relax.
In the announcement, Global mentioned that radio listening in the U.K. is growing significantly, mainly due to digital platforms like DAB and smart speakers. Global quoted recent RAJAR figures show that 50 million people in the U.K. now listen to the radio every week. Smart speaker usage has increased, accounting for 17% of all radio listening, an 18% rise year-on-year.
“Global is home to the most loved radio brands in the U.K., and we’re thrilled to be expanding our offering with one of the biggest simultaneous launches of new radio stations in the country’s history,” said James Rea, Global’s chief broadcasting and content officer. “In an age dominated by algorithms, our dedicated teams meticulously craft playlists, sound design, and features to provide our listeners with tailored genres and eras, offering constant companionship throughout their day.”
Rea also thanked the Global team for making the new stations possible.
The new stations will be available online, on Global Player, the app for Global’s radio brands, and through DAB digital radio and smart speakers.
