Broadcasters renew push for U.S. AM radio legislation on Capitol Hill
Luca Cuccovilla, an audio forensics researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Ilmenau, Germany, is the new chair of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes’ Expert Working Group on Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis.
That mouthful means it “promotes research activities, best practices, training opportunities, and development of innovative techniques in the field of audio forensic science across Europe,” according to a release.
The release adds, “Cuccovillo is a recognized specialist in audio forensics with specific expertise in analyzing processing traces and detecting manipulation in audio material,” making him something of an audio Sherlock Holmes and something increasingly important as the promise of artificial intelligence in audio can be used for good and bad.
He co-authored ENFSI’s “best practice manual for forensic laboratories and scientists in December 2022. The manual… outlines technical methodologies, essential hardware and software, quality principles, training recommendations, and practical guidelines for conducting forensic authenticity analyses of digital audio recordings.”
On the larger front he will be leading the working group’s part in the ENFSI Vision 2030 project, which is a multidisciplinary guide to audio in a digital world.
