Commercial Radio & Audio said GfK’s latest survey shows the Australian commercial audio broadcast sector continues to grow, reaching a record 12.5 million listeners.
CRA highlighted year-on-year audience growth in the 25–54 age group, which it described as a critical demographic for advertisers. This group grew by 4.3%, adding 258,000 listeners to reach 6.2 million. According to CRA, younger audiences also expanded, with 10–17-year-old listeners increasing by 5.3% to 1.5 million.
GfK’s Survey 1 data* showed weekly in-car listening rose 6.5% compared to the same period in 2024, with an additional 634,000 people bringing the total to 10.3 million. CRA said more than 3.1 million Australians now listen to commercial radio via streaming, and digital listening times remained stable throughout the day. CRA pointed to increases in time spent listening via streaming across key demographics:
- 18–24s listened for three hours per week
- 40–54s listened for five hours
- Those aged 65 and over listened for eight hours
CRA CEO Lizzie Young said the figures demonstrate the importance of live and local radio, adding, “Radio’s consistent and sustained growth underscores its enduring role in keeping 12.5 million Australians informed and connected.”
Young said the results also reinforced radio’s role as an advertising platform, offering “a direct path for brands to connect with audiences through trusted voices.”
