Good to Great Lesson #28: Are they feeling you?

Good to Great Lesson #28: Are they feeling you?
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Great radio creates an emotional response. It can make listeners laugh, surprise them, move them or even make them angry. The most dangerous response is not dislike but indifference because indifference leaves no reaction, connection or memory.

Howard Stern, the self-proclaimed “King of All Media,” built one of radio’s most passionate and polarized audiences. His admirers followed the show closely, while even many detractors could describe exactly what he had said and why it angered them. Love him or hate him, listeners paid attention and cared enough to react.

Dislike does not always prevent someone from listening, but indifference gives that person no reason to return. A strong reaction indicates that the content has resonated with the audience and created engagement. Content that produces no feeling becomes easy to ignore and even easier to forget.

Great radio does not need to appeal to everyone. In fact, trying to please every listener can result in programming that elicits no strong response from anyone. A distinctive station accepts that creating passionate supporters may also mean that some people will reject its approach.

Polarization does not require broadcasters to become offensive or manufacture controversy. It comes from having a recognizable point of view, personality and attitude, then expressing them consistently. That identity gives audiences something tangible to respond to and distinguishes the station from widely available music and information.

Before putting something on the air, programmers and personalities should ask what they want the listener to feel. The answer could be excitement, amusement, empathy, curiosity, pride or even constructive anger. Defining the intended emotion helps transform content from information that passes by into an experience that makes an impression.

Information, music and content have never been easier to access. Emotion allows radio to turn those abundant commodities into a meaningful connection. When listeners feel something, they become more likely to remember the experience, return to the station and develop loyalty.

Takeaway: Do not fear genuine listener reactions; emotion shows that the content has made an impact. Fear indifference because content that creates no feeling creates no lasting connection.

Ken Benson has spent more than 40 years helping radio stations around the world build stronger brands, sharper programming and more memorable on-air content. Through his consultancy, P1 Media Group, he has advised broadcasters across six continents on strategies to turn good stations into dominant ones.
