Commercial radio reaches 12.4 million weekly listeners in Australia

Australia’s Commercial Radio & Audio says commercial radio now reaches 12.4 million weekly listeners nationwide, an increase of 97,000 year on year, according to the 2025 GfK Survey 6 results. CRA attributes the growth to in-car listening, which it says remains dominant, up 164,000 to 10.2 million listeners and representing 82% of the total commercial radio audience.
CRA reports that the strongest growth came from listeners aged 25–54, which rose by 99,000 to reach 6.1 million weekly. Breakfast programming remains a key daypart, reaching 8.7 million listeners, up 68,000 year on year.
CRA says digital listening also continues to grow, with 3.5 million Australians now streaming commercial radio each week — an increase of 22,000. Streaming audiences at breakfast grew 8.8% year on year to 1.4 million, with time spent listening remaining stable across key dayparts.

App updates
The organization points to recent updates to its RadioApp — which aggregates more than 350 Australian stations into one platform — as evidence of the industry’s effort to meet audiences wherever they choose to listen.
“Commercial radio has always evolved alongside its audiences and that’s what continues to drive its strength,” said Lizzie Young, CEO of CRA. “It’s not just about reach; it’s about relevance, loyalty and connection across daily routines and platforms.”
Young added that as Australia’s only 100% locally owned mass medium, commercial radio ensures every advertising dollar stays in the country, supporting journalism, emergency broadcasting and local employment.
