Broadcast Partners, Dutch public broadcaster Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO), transmitter maker Syes, transmission-support equipment maker Com-Tech and Austrian digital media distribution specialist Nakalos all got together at the IBC show to create a 5G broadcast demonstration for the public to see.
NPO has been involved in pushing 5G broadcasting.
According to a release, NPO 1 and NPO 3FM got the 5G treatment, “via the 150-meter-high Cellnex RAI Amsterdam broadcasting tower… and was available outdoors and indoors during the IBC2024,” during the show. The release adds that 5G broadcast reception-capable of smartphones were also being demoed at the show.
Also according to the statement, this is the first instance of 5G broadcast in Netherlands.
NPO Chief Technology Officer Jildert de Groot said, “5G Broadcast is a great opportunity for implementing live video and audio into a smartphone that drastically saves mobile data usage. And although many of us rely on the internet as a lifeline, broadcast is still essential for emergency communication due to its robust independent network, its high availability and its lower vulnerability to cyberattacks.”
