Muirfield Broadcast’s WIOZ in Southern Pines, N.C. used Comrex’s Access NX portable IP codec to get up close and personal with live and taped coverage of this year’s U.S. Open golf championship in June. The open is an important local annual event for the station.
WIOZ/WHOZ Operations Manager Rich Rushforth said, “We needed to have a serious impact on radio, but also on social media. Our connection had to be reliable, our audio had to be high-quality, and we needed to be able to be versatile.”
He and his team used the Comrex Access NX for portable remote codec operations. “It was easily able to connect to available Wi-Fi, and the long-lasting internal battery source was incredible — there were times when I held it in one hand for multiple hours as I walked around the event.”
Looking back on how the station has approached the event in the past, he explained, “Our remote set-up couldn’t be stationary and clunky and big. We needed to be able to use our codec on the go — on the driving range, in the interview rooms, anywhere the golfers were.”
Rushforth added, “The ability to get those interviews live is leaps and bounds ahead of having to record it.” Get the whole story here.
