EBU calls on Brussels to protect direct access to radio in vehicles
RØDE has added native remote audio calling to its RØDECaster Pro II and Duo units through a new feature called RØDE CallMe, enabled via a free firmware update.
The system was developed in collaboration with U.K.-based Vortex Communications, a long-standing provider of IP audio solutions for broadcasters. RØDE CallMe leverages Vortex’s SIP-based CallMe Codec platform — widely used across the professional broadcast sector — to deliver ultra-low latency, stereo-quality audio over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, without the need for third-party software or external gear.
Once updated, users can connect two RØDECaster devices directly or invite external contributors via a web link or QR code. The browser-based interface provides secure, high-quality links for remote participation, with full support for SIP interoperability with third-party equipment.
RØDE CEO Damien Wilson said the integration “removes constrictive technical barriers” for creators, enabling professional-grade remote contribution with minimal setup. Ian Prowse, managing director at Vortex, noted that the integration reflects Vortex’s ongoing commitment to “making broadcast-quality IP audio accessible to a broader community of content creators.”
Vortex’s role in powering RØDE CallMe is evident in the system’s scalability and technical backbone. The service is offered in three tiers, ranging from a free Lite version for basic RØDECaster-to-RØDECaster calls to a professional tier with multi-guest capability, advanced SIP controls and customisable codecs.
RØDE CallMe is now available for all RØDECaster Pro II and Duo users via a firmware update.
