DialogCheck is a real-time dialog clarity metering plug-in from Nugen Audio designed for use in streaming, radio, podcasting, film, television and game audio production. It provides objective measurements of speech intelligibility within a mix, offering clear insight into how understandable dialogue will be for real-world audiences, regardless of playback environment or listener attention.
A listener’s ability to understand dialogue is affected by many factors. This includes language, dialect, enunciation, reverb and effects, speech loudness and background noise, listener hearing ability, listening environment, placement of speakers and supporting visuals, among other elements. DialogCheck enables users to easily evaluate their audio to identify sections of speech that might be difficult for listeners to understand.
DialogCheck features more than a dozen interface tools aimed at supporting engineers, including a real-time bar meter, historical graph, statistical readouts and a distribution view, which help identify/address areas where dialogue may be unclear. At its core is Fraunhofer IDMT’s Listening Effort Meter, a validated algorithm that assesses intelligibility using speech recognition and psychoacoustic modeling. Visualizing listening effort enables more informed mixing and post-mix evaluation.
