At a New Dehli conference last week Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Sanjay Jaju announced coming digital FM radio services for 13 metro areas.
Specific digital formats such as Digital Radio Mondiale or HD Radio were not named as Jaju indicated that the government preferred a light regulatory touch to promote innovation and experimentation.
Jaju said, “Light touch regulations will enable innovative content creation and deeper listener engagement, empowering India’s creators. Radio derives its strength from localized content choice embracing diverse community interests and cultural preferences.”
The conference, “Future of Digital Radio Broadcasting in India,” was sponsored by the India Cellular and Electronics Association and Association of Radio Operators for India on Dec. 11.
