UNESCO is gearing up for World Radio Day on Feb. 13. The UNESCO member states proclaimed the date in 2011, and the United Nations General Assembly adopted it in 2012 as a UN International Day. The theme for 2024 is: A century informing, entertaining and educating, and UNESCO has provided 13 ideas as to how stations can celebrate the day.
To help stations worldwide profile #WorldRadioDay on social media, the organization has released visuals for WRD 2024 in English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.
It has also created 20 one-minute audio inserts celebrating the 100-year history of radio and its various functions, forms and characteristics, including radio as the first responder, radio and music, jingles, education and entertainment, radio as the great connector, freedom of expression and radio’s responsibility concerning human rights.
UNESCO says it also encourages radio stations worldwide to collaborate on the important day. To this end, it is providing stations or networks with a list of radio outlets worldwide available to participate in programming partnerships with colleagues in other countries. The organization hopes that stations will schedule interviews with broadcast colleagues worldwide to compare and contrast the history and role of radio in their respective countries on or leading up to World Radio Day.
