Triton Digital, a market research company concentrating on the podcast industry, has released its most recent U.S. Podcast Ranker, a podcast listenership rankings covering the period between July 31 and Sept. 3. These reports usually cover 4–5 weeks per period.
The most popular podcasts focus on news/current events, politics or crime. Some of the podcasts are pure original podcast creations while others are repurposed from content produced for broadcast radio/TV airing. The leading producers are SiriusXM Podcast Network, Wondery, National Public Radio and Cumulus Podcast Network.
It might be of interest that the leading podcast producer is the offshoot of a satellite radio company; the number two is a podcast-only operation that was originally started with help from 20th Century Fox and is now owned by Amazon; number three is an American publicly-funded radio broadcaster; and the fourth is a national radio broadcaster and large radio station owner. Three of the four recycle aired broadcasts or large segments into usable podcasts.
The numbers focus on Average Weekly Downloads and Average Weekly Users. Specifically they are compiled from “participating podcast sales networks,” including “content owners/creators and sales representation organizations.” All of it gathered in “accordance with v2.1 of the IAB Podcast Technical Measurement Guidelines.”
Besides the United States, Triton also provides listenership rankers for Australia, Canada, Latin America, Netherlands and New Zealand, along with select additional related podcast market info.
