The second workshop organized by the Indonesian public broadcaster RRI and the DRM Consortium took place in Jakarta on July 3. About 140 participants attended, including representatives from many RRI stations, headquarters, and other interested Indonesian parties.
This workshop follows an introductory session held in April, which featured presentations from the DRM Consortium, RRI, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (KOMINFO), and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The second workshop aimed to provide step-by-step suggestions for the cost-efficient and practical introduction of DRM for local, regional and national coverage.
Key DRM speakers explained how DRM could enhance existing and new infrastructure to offer improved audio and multimedia services across all frequency bands. They highlighted DRM’s special benefits, such as emergency warnings, highway traffic news and e-learning. The various receiver solutions, including mobile options, were of particular interest to participants.
The workshop concluded that DRM is already a tested and recommended digital radio standard in Indonesia. There was also agreement that DRM offers flexible paths to digitization, including per-broadcaster operations as an AM/FM successor and efficient transmitter-sharing options through Multichannel-DRM. It would enable RRI to lead as a platform operator in the FM band and Band-III. Given that transmission chain elements and receiver technologies are already in place, the workshop concluded that DRM is ready to fully digitize Indonesian radio.
