Rajar has released the United Kingdom’s radio audience figures for the final quarter of 2023. The figures represent all individuals over the age of 15 for the three months ending December 2023.
A snapshot of the figures suggests nothing much has changed since the Q3 2023 figures — 49.5 million adults, or 88% of the measured U.K. population, still tune in to their selected radio stations each week. However, the devil is in the detail. A deep dive into figures shows the inevitable shift away from AM/FM towards DAB-listening.
Another significant shift is towards commercial radio, away from the BBC — 54% of all national listening is now to commercial radio. BBC Radio 2, the BBC’s bellwether for popular listening in the U.K., has seen its weekly reach fall 7% in the past year, losing a million listeners. Global and Bauer — the country’s two most prominent commercial audio groups have been the primary benefactors, with significant gains across their major brands.
