Genelec monitors support recording studios at Tallinn music academy
The Institute of Professional Sound will celebrate the Emmy Award-winning success of “Adolescence” at the 2025 IPS Pro-Audio Show, taking place on Saturday, Nov. 15, at London South Bank University. The free one-day event features a seminar program led by members of the show’s acclaimed sound team, as well as an exhibition showcasing over 90 pro-audio brands and services.
Established in 2010, the IPS Pro-Audio Show is the U.K.’s only event dedicated solely to sound professionals across TV, radio, film, live events, education, recording, streaming and gaming. This year’s edition will feature more than 35 international exhibitors, representing over 90 professional brands.
The complexity of one-shot productions
With eight Emmy wins, “Adolescence” has been one of the most talked-about television productions of the year. The IPS seminar program will bring together Sound Post Production Supervisor James Drake and Production Sound Mixers Kiff McManus and Rob Entwistle to discuss the challenges of capturing and mixing the show’s ambitious one-shot soundtrack.
“The complexity of one-shot productions goes way beyond planning for individual scenes as the crew has to anticipate not just its immediate needs but also what comes next,” said McManus. “It requires an incredible level of planning, and transitions between scenes can be mind-bendingly tricky. The real challenge is moving seamlessly from one scene to the next with the resources at hand, and every decision must account for what happens next.”
Sound capture
The same sound team previously won a British Independent Film Award in 2021 for their work on the one-shot drama “Boiling Point,” directed by “Adolescence” creator Philip Barantini and starring actor and co-writer Stephen Graham. Entwistle said, “Having a crew that has already worked out some of the challenges that come with one-shot productions made a big difference, and it paid off in spades on ‘Adolescence.’ From a sound capture perspective, it’s vital to work hand-in-hand with post production because if you don’t plan it together, you won’t capture what they need.”
The seminar lineup also includes HHB Technical Support Engineer Lukas Simma, who will present “Post Magic!,” a session exploring new Avid Pro Tools and EuCon features, Sony’s 360 Virtual Mixing Environment software, and recent plug-in developments.
The IPS Pro-Audio Show on Saturday, Nov. 15, runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Hub, London South Bank University.
