HMDK selects Genelec for control room

Stuttgart, Germany’s Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, often mercifully shortened to HMDK, has chosen Genelec speakers for an upgrade of its recording control room.

The school for music and the performing arts has been evolving through various surround and now immersive formats, settling recently on a 9.1.4 configuration. Genelec speakers have carried the audio duty at each step.

The most recent resting point utilizes Genelec 8351A monitors in an up-front LCR arrangement with smaller 8341As filling out the surrounds and overheads. A 7370A subwoofer handles the bass feed.

Other Genelec speakers such as 1032Bs and 8350As can be found in other rooms and 4430As fill out the school’s “Klangmobil” mobile recording truck.

Besides teaching and a student performance venue the school has a public-facing including work with German public broadcaster SWR.

HMDK Deputy Technical Director Arne Morgner said the new speakers “were particularly interesting for Control Room A because we’re not just a traditional production studio — we also work extensively with students. Therefore, it was important for us to offer as many people as possible a balanced listening experience — we wanted a large sweet spot.”
