Genelec Inc. has named the recipients of its annual scholarships awarded in association with the Audio Engineering Society Educational Foundation.
Franco Galetto, a graduate student at Middle Tennessee State University, received the Genelec Dr. Ilpo Martikainen Audio Visionary Scholarship. Nancy Rico-Mineros, a graduate student at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), was awarded the Genelec Mike Chafee Audio Pioneering Scholarship. Both awards include a $5,000 grant.
The Martikainen Scholarship honors Genelec founder Dr. Ilpo Martikainen, who is recognized for his contributions to loudspeaker development and his long-standing involvement with the AES. Galetto is in the final year of his MFA program, developing a comprehensive workflow for mixing music in Dolby Atmos. “I plan to research and organize techniques used by today’s professionals, integrate my experiments, and package everything into an accessible resource,” he said.
The Chafee Scholarship promotes the advancement of women in audio and pays tribute to Michael Chafee, a long-time Genelec representative and supporter of women in the industry. Rico-Mineros is developing a women-led audio group at CCRMA while contributing to a documentary on its history. “Much of my research interest is highlighting marginalized communities within audio,” she said.
