Commercial Radio & Audio has released the December 2025 results of the Australian Podcast Ranker in partnership with Triton Digital, with news, society and culture, and true crime remaining the most listened-to podcast genres in Australia, the industry body said.
CRA said the Australian Podcast Ranker is the country’s only official, third-party-verified podcast measurement system, governed by a cross-industry steering committee and used as a benchmark for podcast audience data across commercial, independent, and non-commercial publishers.
According to the December data, news podcasts reached 4,663,454 monthly listeners, making it the most listened-to genre. Society and culture followed with 3,646,984 listeners, ahead of true crime with 2,588,481. Sports podcasts attracted 2,516,865 monthly listeners, narrowly ahead of comedy at 2,511,478.
CRA said the most-listened-to individual podcast in December was “Hamish & Andy,” produced by LiSTNR, with a monthly audience of 609,350 listeners. “Mamamia Out Loud,” produced by Mamamia, ranked second with 560,895 listeners, followed by “ABC News Top Stories” from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation with 524,580. “Sky News Australia Update,” from News Corp Australia, reached 449,275 listeners, while “The Grade Cricketer,” produced by DM Podcasts, recorded 424,672 monthly listeners.
High levels of engagement
Lizzie Young, CEO of CRA, said podcast audiences show high levels of engagement. “Podcast audiences are active, loyal and commercially engaged. Whether they’re listening for leisure, planning purchases, or deepening knowledge, they’re listening with intent. The Ranker delivers the verified insights advertisers need to reach consumers who are ready to act,” she said.
CRA also highlighted audience behavior in the health and fitness category, noting that 12 percent of monthly podcast listeners tune in to health and fitness content. Of those listeners, 54 percent have been listening to podcasts for two to five years, while 35 percent plan to buy gym memberships or fitness equipment in the following year. Nearly three-quarters of those listeners are aged between 25 and 54, CRA said.
The Australian Podcast Ranker is published monthly and provides a snapshot of the top 300 podcasts listened to by Australians, as well as the top 300 Australian-produced podcasts. CRA said the results comply with IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines.
