Comrex has begun shipping FieldLink, a new IP audio codec designed to simplify sideline reporting by using smartphones as wireless contribution devices for sports and live events. The U.S.-based company, known internationally for its ACCESS and BRIC-Link codecs, frames FieldLink as a practical alternative to traditional RF bodypacks and wireless mic systems.
FieldLink is installed in the press box or another central location. It works with a directional Wi-Fi access point to create a private network for reporters and talent in the field. Using Comrex’s free FieldTap app on iOS or Android, contributors can send and receive broadcast-quality audio from up to roughly 300 meters away, depending on the approved access point used. Reporters can also connect a USB-C mic and headphone adapter to their smartphones when needed.
According to Comrex, the workflow is intentionally simple. Reporters scan a QR code on the FieldLink unit to register their phone with the secure network, then connect through the app. The company says the setup provides more predictable performance than ad hoc cellular calls while remaining familiar for talent who already rely on their phones in the field.
Managing large venues
The base configuration focuses on routing audio from the sidelines back to the press box or a central position. An optional studio codec license extends FieldLink’s role, enabling the unit to function as the link back to the main studio over the public internet. With this upgrade, the device can support up to two sideline reporters with bidirectional audio while maintaining the studio connection. The system also integrates with other Comrex IP codecs and supports standard SIP interoperability.
FieldLink includes pro-grade audio I/O for connection to mixers or consoles and provides dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, one of which powers the Wi-Fi access point via PoE. Comrex says the product is aimed at sports broadcasters managing large venues, but may also suit festivals, street events and other remote productions that want to reduce their reliance on dedicated RF systems.
Demo units are available, and Comrex is encouraging interested broadcasters to get in touch to trial FieldLink in their own environments.
