At Pentangle Studio in Tokyo, engineer Masahito Tobisawa decided to redo the place for a 7.1.4 immersive setup.
His speakers of choice were Genelec — 11 8330A two-way monitors, two 8341A three-way coaxial speakers and a 7350A subwoofer.
A release notes that Tobisawa was initially “skeptical of powered monitors” but “had a change of heart after trialling the Genelec 8020 nearfield models and later, the 8341A.” He thought, “It sounded like a direct line to the sound I had in mind.”

His chosen studio space is small, rather like an OB van, so control is critical. For that he also selected Genelec’s 9320A reference controller, full digital signal routing via a 9301B AES/EBU multichannel interface and Genelec Loudspeaker Manager software.
After installation, calibration and tuning, the release notes “Tobisawa found himself hearing the immersive field in a new way.” He said, “When everything is aligned, you don’t really notice the height or rear channels — they just blend. That’s how immersive sound should be. It’s not about spotlighting effects, it’s about a natural sense of space.”
