South Africa’s Bosveld Stereo Switches to AoIP

South African community radio station Bosveld Stereo is the first station in South Africa to deploy Calrec’s IP-based Type R for Radio.

Calrec’s South African partner Wild and Marr oversaw the installation. The company explains that Wild and Marr used Type R’s modular approach to create a system that fit Bosveld Stereo’s requirements. The systems integrator delivered a Type R for radio core plus two hardware fader panels and one large soft panel. Users can access the system remotely and AoIP (Dante) transports audio to the transmitter.

“Our existing mixers were reaching end-of-life and we wanted to move into an IP future,” said Graat Pelser, chairperson at Bosveld Stereo. “We’ve found it very easy to adapt to and the configurability is a great help. We use it on a daily basis and we know that it’s easily expandable if required.”

Launched in 2008, Bosveld Stereo is a community-oriented radio station that uses local talent to entertain its listeners. The station broadcasts in Afrikaans across the North West Province. Everyone who currently works at Bosveld Stereo lives within the broadcasting footprint of the station. They all take an active part in one or more of the community projects Bosveld Stereo works on.

“Due to the pandemic, broadcast systems engineer Dwaine Schreuder and I pre-commissioned Bosveld Stereo’s Type R system off-site. After the unit’s installation, it was literally just plug and play,” said Anton van Wyk, Wild and Marr’s technical director.
