SoundStack has introduced HTTP Live Streaming for podcast publishing. The company says the format splits episodes into small media chunks, typically 2–10 seconds, so playback starts almost immediately and runs more smoothly on any connection or device. Unlike a single MP3 download, HLS supports adaptive delivery that adjusts the bitrate according to the listener’s bandwidth, reducing buffering and stuttering, particularly on mobile devices or when on the move.
According to SoundStack, the format enables a wider range of ad delivery options, such as HLS interstitial, which allows for more efficient insertion and potentially higher revenue for publishers. It also supports live content through the LIT (live item tag), alongside other Podcasting 2.0 features, and enables seamless transitions between audio and video. At the same time, HLS provides more accurate measurement by unifying data across media chunks, giving publishers and advertisers a clearer picture of exactly how much content was delivered and which parts each audience member received.
SoundStack CEO Jon Stephenson said, “Podcast consumers are some of the most enthusiastic audiences out there — the onus is on all of us to keep them coming back, and fast, clear listening is fundamental. But that’s just the starting point. Enabling more efficient ad insertion, setting the foundation for more accurate measurement and more, HLS will be a tremendous catalyst to increased ad spend and publisher growth.”
