Tokyo’s Prime Sound Studio Form, a leading recording/mastering studio for decades, recently decided to “upgrade” a pair of elderly Genelec 1035A three-way main monitors in Room 1, one of its frequently used rooms.
The studio decided on Genelec’s 1235A but did not want to lose the 1035’s “sound.”
A release explained, “When the time came to modernize, the team decided against replacing their reference monitors, instead opting for a retrofit that retained the enclosures while upgrading the internals to 1235A specification. ‘It was a way to keep our identity, but move forward,’ explains technical engineer Yuhiko Utsu.”

In came digital Class D amplifiers to replace the original analog amps. That swap killed a persistent low hiss. The dual mid-range and dual low-frequency drivers were replaced with stock 1235A pieces.
But the studio wanted to keep the 1035 high-frequency driver so keeping with personal service, Genelec acquiesced.
The sort-of-new monitors are now also conversant with Genelec’s GLM tuning software which as aided in ironing out some problems in the decade’s old room.
