Sixty-three percent of people aged 15 and older in mainland Portugal listen to music online, equivalent to approximately 5.4 million people, according to Marktest’s Barème Internet 2026 study. The findings show that online music has become a mainstream activity in the country.
Smartphones are the leading device for online music listening, with 54% of mainland Portugal’s population aged 15 and older using one for that purpose. Since 63% listen to music online through any device, this means smartphones are used by approximately 86% of online music listeners. Computers are used by 26% of the total population, tablets by 6% and televisions by 4%. Listeners may use more than one device.
Listening is almost universal among younger people, reaching 98% of those aged 15–24 and 97% of the 25–34 age group. It remains above 70% among people up to age 54, then falls to 47% for those aged 55–64, 30% among 65- to 74-year-olds, and 15% among people older than 74.
The study found only a modest difference between men and women, with 65% of men and 61% of women listening to music online. Barème Internet 2026 covers residents of mainland Portugal aged 15 and older, representing a population of approximately 8.59 million based on the country’s 2021 census.
