Speaker maker Genelec has debuted a new, big, tri-amped three-way powered monitor, the 8380A.
It is slotted into the company’s Main Ones line.
The heavy lifting is done by a 15-inch woofer while the mid and high sections are created by a Minimum Diffraction Coaxial unit in Genelec-speak. That construct consists of a 125-millimeter/4 7/8-inch midrange driver and a 25-millimeter/1-inch tweeter.
Power comes through a 500 W Class D amplifier for the bass with another Class D amp outputting 250 Watts for the midrange driver. A 200 W Class AB amplifier handles the tweeter. The whole speaker weighs in at 54 kilograms/just under 120 pounds.
Naturally the 8380A is fully compatible with Genelec’s GLM loudspeaker management software.
Genelec Managing Director Siamäk Naghian said. “With the recent introduction of the free-standing 8381A five-way main monitor, we could see the clear potential for a more compact three-way design that distills our latest coaxial technology into a traditional flush-mounting format. The 8380A fills that gap perfectly, and brings next-generation midfield performance to discerning studio professionals and home audio enthusiasts everywhere.”
