Broadcasters renew push for U.S. AM radio legislation on Capitol Hill
Sports radio, both talk and content, has been one of the bright spots in radio in the United States over the last two decades. Every major city has 2–3 stations and even mid-size cities may have two competing for ears. It helps that sports is premium content on broadcast TV, cable and streaming, thus providing plenty of content and discussion topics for radio stations.
Wheatstone recently posted a very interesting piece on WMVP(AM) 1000 kHz/ESPN Chicago and how it grew from a standard sports radio station to a multimedia/multiplatform sports content behemoth providing multiple revenue chains for its owner, Good Karma Brands.
GKB was, not long ago, a small midwestern broadcaster but now it runs ESPN Radio nationally.
And the Wheatstone connection?
ESPN Chicago assembled a solid engineering team, one with imagination, and decided to see how far it could stretch its WheatNet IP backbone while marrying it to video to create extra streamed video programs.
Good Karma Brands Senior Director of Engineering Scott Clifton said, “We think of GKB as a multimedia company. We are social media, we are radio, we are video. We don’t have a television product per se, but we have video and we can do so much with all of that.”
