Ensemble pour le DAB+ urges French government to strengthen public support
The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) has a 200-year history of excellence in audiovisual education. Its Institute of Composition, Sound and Music Production equips students with the skills to succeed in an increasingly digital and networked audio industry. The school’s studios are located in the Future Art Lab, an ambitious multi-story high-tech complex.
The recent upgrade of Studio B, used for classical music production training, includes the installation of a Lawo mc²36 MkII all-in-one mixing console. This follows the addition of a Lawo mc²56 MkIII to Studio Control Room 1 in Aug. 2023, making it the second Lawo console used at mdw for training and production.
Tailored solutions for classical music education
According to mdw, classical music recording and post-production require a mixing console with precise configurability to manage multiple channels and capture intricate sonic textures.
“The mc²36 MkII enables us to train students at the highest technical level while addressing the unique demands of classical music production,” said Hans Döllinger, studio director at the Future Art Lab. “Its DSP capabilities and flexible configuration meet our needs, and Lawo’s widespread use in broadcasting, opera and theater eases our graduates’ transition to professional careers.”
The mc²36 MkII offers 256 processing channels at 48 and 96 kHz, with an I/O capacity of 864 channels, making it ideal for diverse training scenarios. Döllinger says the console’s IP-based architecture and native support for IP Easy/HOME allow seamless integration into mdw’s network infrastructure, enabling efficient audio-over-IP workflows without additional hardware. Studio B also features a DirectOut Prodigy for expanded connectivity.
“This combination ensures superior sound quality,” said Professor Pauline Heister, who oversees the classical audio engineering program.
A benchmark for audio education
The mc²36 MkII combines high-quality audio processing with features tailored for student learning. Its intuitive interface includes color-coded TFT fader strips, touch-sensitive rotary controls, and full-HD touchscreens for clear visual feedback. The console supports seamless DAW integration, enhancing hands-on training.
“With the mc²36 MkII, students gain experience on a state-of-the-art console, preparing them for professional audio production,” said Döllinger. “The console also fosters critical problem-solving skills as students configure complex routings and network connections.”
Installed and integrated by Aug. 2024, the mc²36 MkII highlights mdw’s commitment to cutting-edge education. Lawo configured the consoles at its Rastatt facility and said it underscores Lawo’s role as a trusted partner in delivering innovative solutions for the educational sector.
