Here’s something you don’t see every day, a PoE-powered subwoofer.
Using its energy-efficient Smart IP technology, the clever engineers at Genelec have figured out how to maximize energy usage with onboard storage potential to turn the trickle of electrical energy available in a power over Ethernet cable into a strong enough force to push a subwoofer driver.
The 3440A matches a 6.5-inch (165 millimeters) driver with a 70 W Class D amplifier to get the job done. Genelec rates maximum output at 106 dB in the 35–120 Hz range.
Measuring 18.75 inches x 18.75 inches x 8.75 inches (475 millimeters x 475 millimeters x 220 millimeters) and weighing 32 pounds (14.5 kilograms), the 3440A is mountable or can be placed on the floor. Not needing to connect to an electrical power source its placement options are wide-ranging.
The 3440A works with Genelec’s Smart IP Manager IP audio network management system. It is available in black or white. It has an RJ45 connector along with an analog Euroblock.
While it’s obviously not going to be specced for music venues and clubs, arenas and places where sound can get loud or need to pound out a beat, the 3440A can help offices and commercial installations fill out the sound system.
