Commercial Radio & Audio has released the April edition of the Australian Podcast Ranker, reporting continued strength in news and sport listening and highlighting demographic trends that it says may be relevant for advertisers.
Produced in partnership with Triton Digital, CRA positions the Australian Podcast Ranker as Australia’s official third-party podcast measurement system overseen by a cross-industry steering committee. According to CRA, the monthly ranking is designed to provide a standardized view of podcast listening across commercial, independent and non-commercial publishers.
Lizzie Young, CEO of CRA, said the role of independently verified audience data is becoming more important as podcasting continues to attract advertiser attention. “As the medium grows and advertiser interest deepens, the need for verified, independent data increases,” Young said. “The Ranker exists to meet that need — a single, credible source of truth for a thriving industry. For advertisers navigating an evolving landscape, that transparency is what turns interest into investment.”

In April, News remained Australia’s largest podcast genre with 4.94 million monthly listeners, followed by Society & Culture with 3.66 million and Sports with 3.23 million. Comedy ranked fourth at 2.45 million listeners, while True Crime rounded out the top five with 2.26 million listeners.
CRA also highlighted listening behavior among men aged 25–54, citing survey data showing that 57% of male podcast listeners in that age group engaged with sports content, 52% listened to technology podcasts, and 47% consumed leisure content. CRA added that 82% of these listeners are employed full-time and 60% own a car, describing the audience as attractive to automotive, technology and leisure advertisers.
At the podcast level, “Hamish & Andy,” produced by LiSTNR (SCA), led the April rankings with 832,058 monthly listeners. “Mamamia Out Loud” followed with 722,478 listeners, ahead of “Sky News Australia Update” on 514,202. The New York Times podcast “The Daily” placed fourth with 453,972 listeners, while “ABC News Top Stories” completed the top five with 419,530 listeners.
The Australian Podcast Ranker tracks the top 300 podcasts listened to by Australians each month and publishes a separate ranking of the top 300 Australian podcasts. CRA said results are produced in line with the IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines.
