According to the DRM Consortium, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the National Radio and TV Administration (NRTA) have announced a plan to establish a mandatory national standard for an onboard radio broadcast receiving system. The system is designed to safeguard personal safety, protect lives and property, ensure national security and support economic and social management needs.
This move follows a document issued in September 2023 by the MIIT, the NRTA and the State Administration for Market Regulation. The document encouraged the Chinese automotive industry to support DRM in the AM band and CDR for FM and urged provincial transmission stations to broadcast domestic DRM services.
DRM’s Emergency Warning Functionality allows for rapid dissemination of disaster warnings to the public and authorities, providing relevant information with maximum coverage. When an alarm is active, DRM receivers automatically switch to the alarm program and display detailed information in multiple languages using DRM’s Journaline advanced text service. Receivers in standby mode will also wake up automatically.
The project to create a mandatory standard for an onboard radio broadcast receiving system is set to last 22 months. It will focus on the technical aspects of testing and evaluation. This includes functional and performance requirements of terminals and antennas, environmental reliability according to automotive regulations, electromagnetic compatibility and appropriate testing methods. The project is currently in a public call for ideas phase and is expected to conclude in October 2025.
