World Radio Day is a celebratory day designated by the Member States of UNESCO and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. On Feb. 13, WRD will celebrate it’s 10th anniversary.

This year’s theme is “New World, New Radio.” UNESCO has organized the celebration around three subthemes: Evolution, Creation and Connection. It is calling on all radio stations, audio shows and podcasters around the world to participate, whether with a special broadcast or local event.

UNESCO notes that radio is still the most consumed medium worldwide today. It presents itself as an arena where all voices can be expressed, represented and heard, says the organization. The challenges of a global pandemic especially highlighted the platform’s resilience and adaptability. It continues to be an accessible way to connect, educate and inform.

Organizers will be updating its website and social media with more information and marketing materials as Feb. 13 draws closer. Participants can use #WorldRadioDay and #NewWorldNewRadio to publicize their events on Facebook and Twitter.

They are also encouraged to register their activities to be included on the World Radio Day event map.
