Italian radio station RLV Radio a Colori will celebrate World Radio Day 2023 on Monday, Feb. 13, under the theme “Radio and Peace.”
World Radio Day is a UNESCO initiative inspired by the opening words in the organization’s constitution: “Since wars are born in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defense of peace must be built.”
Over the course of the day, RLV Radio a Colori, an ongoing partner in the initiative, will tell seven stories of radio stations bringing peace to places where violence has created economic, social and psychological damage.
War is not only an armed conflict; it is also a conflict over narratives in the media that can exacerbate tension or encourage peaceful cooperation, for example, in setting the tone for political debate around elections. Radio has a vital role in mitigating tensions and informing citizens with impartiality, offering a dialog between different parties.
Between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., RLV will tell these seven stories:
- Radio tells Cambodian Youth about the Khmer Rouge.
- Peace goes on air in Côte d’Ivoire.
- Radio Okapì: 20 years of commitment to peace.
- Radio Amani FM teaches peace in Kenya.
- Radio in the peace-building process in South Asia.
- Since October, six radio stations in Africa are back on the air for peace.
- Radio Miraya builds trust in South Sudan, even amid hate and misinformation.
