Podcast listeners show strong retail influence in Australia

Commercial Radio & Audio, in partnership with Triton Digital, has published the October results of the Australian Podcast Ranker, which CRA says is the country’s only official, third-party verified podcast measurement system. The Ranker lists the top 300 podcasts listened to in Australia as well as the top 300 Australian-produced titles. CRA said the Ranker continues to provide a transparent view of how Australians engage with on-demand audio, helping advertisers understand where audiences are concentrating their attention.

Lizzie Young, CEO of CRA, said the Ranker gives brands confidence in their investment decisions. “The Ranker provides a trusted, transparent view of how Australians engage with audio — giving brands confidence in where they invest,” she said.

Audience profile

CRA highlighted that podcast listeners represent a valuable consumer group for retailers, particularly during major shopping periods. According to Triton Digital’s Demos+ data, 56 percent of monthly podcast listeners are active online shoppers, positioning them as a strong demographic ahead of events such as Black Friday.

Age data also indicates a concentration of listeners in key purchasing years. CRA said 77 percent of monthly podcast listeners fall within the 18 to 49 age group, with 71 percent in the 25 to 54 bracket. The organization added that half of weekly listeners have been consuming podcasts for between two and five years, and 78 percent also listen to radio weekly, reflecting a broadly engaged audio audience.

Genre trends

The October results confirm that News remains the most listened-to genre in Australia, reaching 4.8 million monthly listeners. Society and Culture followed with 4.5 million, ahead of Sports at just over 3 million. True Crime attracted 2.9 million listeners, while Comedy reached 2.8 million.

CRA said listener interest remains evenly spread across several content categories. The organization noted strong audience engagement in True Crime and Leisure at 63 percent each, followed by Arts at 62 percent, Health and Fitness at 61 percent, and Kids and Family at 60 percent. The data reflects genre composition across Australia’s adult podcast audience and is drawn from Triton Digital’s Demos+ survey covering Q4 2023 to Q2 2025.

Top podcasts

At the individual podcast level, “Hamish & Andy” from LiSTNR remained the most-listened-to podcast in October with 881,000 monthly listeners. “ABC News Top Stories” from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation ranked second with 783,000 listeners, showing continued demand for national news updates.

Mamamia’s “Mamamia Out Loud” was third with 623,000 monthly listeners. “Shameless” from Shameless Media reached 532,000, while “Sky News Australia Update,” produced by News Corp Australia, completed the top five with 483,000. CRA said the distribution of top titles reflects the ongoing mix of news, conversation and cultural commentary shaping Australia’s podcast listening habits.
