On Nov. 29, NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt participated in a United States Senate AI Insight Forum titled “Transparency, Explainability, Intellectual Property and Copyright.”
According to a NAB media release, LeGeyt emphasized the vital role of local broadcasters in providing trusted news, sports and entertainment. “He spoke about how, as generative AI advances without guardrails and is used to spread misinformation, broadcasters are combatting online misinformation head-on by dedicating teams to fact-check viral stories and claims. LeGeyt underscored concerns about the unauthorized ingestion of broadcasters’ copyrighted content into AI systems without compensation, which potentially hinders reinvestment in local journalism,” the release said.
The NAB added that LeGeyt raised concerns about the lack of attribution in AI-generated outputs, saying this makes it “increasingly difficult to identify and distinguish legitimate broadcast content from unvetted and potentially inaccurate content being generated by AI” and that using AI to manipulate and distort information “is a significant and growing problem that must be addressed in balance with the First Amendment.”
