Australian commercial radio posts year-on-year audience growth

CRA GfK 7 2025 Lizzie Young quote

Commercial Radio & Audio says commercial radio in Australia reached 12.4 million weekly listeners in GfK Survey 7, 2025, an increase of 139,000 compared with the same period last year.

The industry body says breakfast delivered the most significant uplift, adding 172,000 listeners year on year to reach 8.8 million. CRA notes this reinforces breakfast as a key daypart for commercial radio.

CRA reports strong gains in the 25–54 demographic, which grew by 84,000 to 6.1 million weekly listeners. The 40–64 age group also increased, up 49,000 to 4.3 million. The organization says in-car listening remains central to how many Australians consume radio, with the audience rising by 188,000 to 10.2 million.

Supporting Australian communities

Digital listening also grew. CRA says 3.5 million people streamed commercial radio each week, an increase of 80,000 year-on-year. Breakfast streaming rose to 1.3 million, up 19,000.

Lizzie Young, CEO of CRA, said, “Commercial radio offers something increasingly rare in a fragmented media landscape, engaged audience attention, proven ROI and the certainty that your investment supports Australian communities, jobs and critical infrastructure.”

Young added, “For advertisers looking for the best media returns in 2026, the power of audio cannot be underestimated — these numbers demonstrate commercial radio’s ability to connect with audiences anytime and anywhere and drive results for brands.”

Survey 7 is the final ratings release for 2025. CRA says Survey 8 will be published on Jan. 20, 2026. You can find the full 2026 survey dates here
