Benztown shows everyone wins with contests

Benztown, Hey Morton!, XHITZ, contests

For many radio stations and syndicated programs across the globe contests are an important ingredient or a nice change of pace.

Here, in San Diego, Calif., Benztown’s syndicated “Hey Morton!” program took advantage of a local landmark centennial celebration to have a contest — free radio promotion for the landmark’s big celebration. A local car dealer supplied a car, for ad consideration and promotion value. And the station held the actual contest at a remote during the beachfront celebration drawing listeners and event attendees (see picture above).

Everyone’s a winner!

Oh, what was the contest about, you might ask. Easy, guess the weight of the car. And to prevent anyone winning by looking up the model on the internet — some extra “mystery ballast” was added.

Guess the Weight contestants and “Hey Morton!” show personnel on stage during the deciding moments of the contest. The eventual winner is in the yellow shirt.

“Hey Morton!” show host Rick Morton said, “We wanted a fun, unique contest that paid tribute to the old midway games from back in the day and ‘Guess the Weight’ was a perfect fit! We had a blast!”
