WUKY employs major upgrade with Nautel

WUKY's new Nautel GV30 and GV10 transmitters

Lexington, Kentucky-based listener-supported public FM station WUKY recently underwent a major upgrade of its HD transmission facility. The station is part of the University of Kentucky.

This was another stage in the station’s transition to all-digital technology after installing a Telos Alliance all-Axia studio facility in 2018.

Central to the upgrade was the station’s transmitter choice: a 30 kW Nautel GV30 for the main site and a 10 kW Nautel GV10 for the auxiliary site. The station also selected an Inovonics 551 for the high-tech HD modulation monitor, and its main STL consists of a Moseley NX-Gen-T 6 GHz system with MPX nodes as a backup system and an Omnia 9s processor.

This transition came with challenges, chiefly supply chain problems that caused longer than usual lead times on some of the equipment. However, the WUKY team implemented the new transmission facilities without any significant issues and says it is thrilled with the quality of its new HD signal.
